Pimpernel has been highly impressed by the sleek looks, the social benevolence and practical magnificence of Dott.
Who, or what, is Dott?
Dott stands for Design of the Times and is a Design Council project that celebrates Cornwall’s creativity and ingenuity.
Dott runs practical projects here in Cornwall that use great design to create a more sustainable and inclusive society.
Like Dott, we at the Scarlet believe that great design can bring about lasting benefits, for people here in Cornwall and beyond.
Luxury hotels are usually over-heated and air conditioned, The guests are often over serviced with excessive laundry water use and too much food, much of which is flown in from the outer reaches of the globe with scant regard for any environmental impact locally, nationally or internationally.
When the Scarlet was designed, it was designed with an unwavering commitment to a high quality guest experience coupled with a low environmental impact.
Emma Stratton, co-owner of the Scarlet said: ‘Sustainability was at the heart of the project; we wanted to make a hotel that combined luxury with sensitivity to the effects that hotels have on the planet.
‘There’s always been this cliché that ‘environmental’ isn’t terribly comfortable, it’s not very nice, it doesn’t taste good and it’s sludge green.
‘We wanted to show it could be very different.’
Like the Scarlet, Dott’s work isn’t just about highbrow design concepts. Dott is breathing new life into deprived areas, improving public transport options and co-designing a low carbon economy. Dott is putting Cornish produce in the local and global spotlight.
The Design Council, Cornwall Council, University College Falmouth and Technology Strategy Board have gone into partnership to deliver the Dott programme throughout Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly during 2010.
Why not unlock your creativity and do your bit to design a better future.

Ben Fogle, lashings of champagne and gold stars all round...it's been quite a week here at the Scarlet.
We're on a high after being crowned Small Hotel of the Year at the Cornwall Tourism Awards and winning a joint award with our big sister Bedruthan Steps for Sustainable Tourism Business of 2010. Bedruthan also won Large Hotel of the Year.
Collecting the aforementioned awards from Ben - floppy haired, disarmingly charming, BBC Ben - wasn't half bad either.
The awards are organised and presented by VisitCornwall, the Cornwall Development Company tourism service for the county.
Martin Brooks, Cornwall Development Company chairman, said: "Once again, the Cornwall Tourism Awards have highlighted the fantastic visitor offering that we have in Cornwall and demonstrated the strength in service, product and character that we have in this great county."
We were delighted when Roundhouse Barn Holidays was crowned Business of the Year, after winning the coveted Winner of Winners trophy...well done and well deserved.
